Finished a box of Charlie’s CDs. Here are three stand-outs, in my opinion. Listen to Pt. 1. Solid, Jackson.
Code Mesa by Jenifer Smith (1997, Point Music)
I wasn’t able to find any biographical information on vocalist Jenifer Smith. Musically it’s a mix of The Cranberries, Pentangle, and Gregorian chant. From the same label that released Gavin Bryars’ 1996 Farewell To Philosophy CD, on which Charlie plays.
One Night Stand: The Town Hall Concert 1947 by Sarah Vaughan and Lester Young (1997, Blue Note)
This previously unreleased 1947 concert recording marks the only meeting between saxophonist Young and vocalist Vaughan, who trade sets then come together for one penultimate song. Drummer Roy Haynes is in incredible form. They are electrifing performances. Not on Spotify or YouTube, I leave you the Pandora link: https://pandora.app.link/0pAQJdzxrUb.
The Breeze And I: The Caterina Valente Collection (1997, Varèse Sarabande)
Valente was an Italian-French chantreuse who sang in 13 different languages. I’d never heard of her before. This CD covers her work between 1955-1961 but isn’t available streaming. Here’s a similar “best of” album from 1986 on Spotify.

Catering Valente was incredibly beautiful and incredibly talented. She sang like a bird and could play serious guitar.
