Charlie was recognized as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment For The Arts in 2012. I have lots of NEA Jazz Master program material in boxes, especially from 2012 and the years directly preceding and superseding it.
I found two copies of a book/magazine, published in 2012, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the NEA Jazz Master Fellowship. It was established in 1982, according to the NEA website, to “nationally recognize outstanding jazz musicians for their lifelong achievements and mastery of jazz…”
An attached compact disc contains brief interview snippets and music from many jazz luminaries recognized since the award’s inception, including Kenny Barron, Jim Hall, Roy Haynes, Yusef Lateef, Lee Konitz, McCoy Tyner, and Ellis Marsalis, just to name a few.
My father wasn’t included on the CD, but he does have a page in the book. In one photo, he sits next to trumpeter Nicholas Payton, son of bassist Walter Payton.
