Charlie Haden & Jim Hall Live In Zurich 2002
In January of 2022 I began the process of listening to and gathering my father’s record collection into a research database. By October I’ve officially completed the non-classical vinyl. There are over 1500 albums.
I have about thirty more classical music discs to go through, and when that’s finished the vinyl census will be concluded. I’ll go to the storage space and bring over the first box of CDs. But before then, I have a suitcase filled with live bootlegs, studio masters, rough studio edits, vinyl rips of some of Charlie’s favorite musicians, and other items which are not commercially available. All the information from these will be put into a spreadsheet and preserved for future scholars.
I opened the case for the first time yesterday. The item on top was a plastic bag filled with tour programs, typewritten notes and itineraries, and several live CDs from a tour Charlie did with Jim Hall in 2002. The selection for today’s podcast is a concert they played in Zurich, Switzerland.
Jim Hall was a jazz guitarist born in 1930. He died in 2013. Charlie and Jim were very good friends. They played on each other’s albums and toured together. This recording sees the two very relaxed with the audience. My dad tells jokes. Jim talks about their early days in L.A. and NYC. Their friendship shines through their stories and musical interactions.
