Sam Kashner’s memoir When I Was Cool: My Life at the Jack Kerouac School (2003, Harper Collins) (sixth book pictured below) begins in 1976, when he was accepted as the only student at Naropa Institute’s Jack Kerouac School Of Disembodied Poetics, in Boulder, CO. Charlie taught music at Naropa for several summers - “[Charlie] was the music department,” Kashner writes. He devotes a few pages to an evening spent on the town with my father. I can’t imagine Charlie sitting on the roof of a taxi watching planes land - too loud. Or uttering the word “horseshit”. But the rest seems accurate. He considered Burroughs, and Ginsberg, poseurs, when he did think about them. Reading these pages reminded me of the summer my mom, my sisters, and I spent at Naropa with Charlie a few years later.
