I’ve written a few times about Charlie and Ruth’s friendship with jazz vocalist Jeri Southern. One of the main love interests in Jeri’s life was Hollywood film composer Hugo Friedhofer. They lived in the same courtyard apartment building on Bronson Ave. in the last years of Friedhofer’s life. Friedhofer orchestrated Max Steiner’s score for Charlie’s favorite film, Casablanca (Michael Curtiz, 1942). He won the 1947 Best Original Score Oscar for The Best Years Of Our Lives (William Wyler, 1946), and was nominated in the category for several others.
Amongst the trove of Charlie’s books I saved from probate, there are two from Mr. Friedhofer’s estate. I’m assuming they were either given to Charlie by Ms. Southern, or by her daughter, Kathryn, with whom my father and Ruth were also friends.
