Jerry Granelli (1940-2021) is one of the most underappreciated drummers in jazz. He’s perhaps best known for playing on the 1965 soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas. He viewed this session as “just another gig.” He’s steeped in free jazz. The Charlie Brown songs sounded a lot different when the Vince Guaraldi Trio performed them live. He jammed with Bill Evans, Sly Stone, and travelled with the Grateful Dead. Jerry and my father met in the early 1960s and stayed friends for decades.
